DIGITAL DAN DEVINE
ABOUT

A proven skill set for serving people.
Dan Devine CSR.png

From an early age, I have always had an interest in my community. It was inspired by a public service announcement (PSA) commercial during the early 1970's by "Keep America Beautiful". It featured a native American in despair over the nation's pollution caused by thoughtless Americans. The ad inspired me to remove litter from my neighborhood park and stay informed about local environmental and climate issues.

As a teenager, I was a member of Troop 382 in my hometown with the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Life Scout. My favorite merit badges were Citizenship in the Community, Nation, and World, respectively. In order to complete the requirements of these merit badges, I learned more about local issues involving my community. Also, I explored the functions of Congress and our American federal government, and global matters affecting our world.

In 1996, I had the opportunity to work as a staff member of a local congressional campaign. My position involved the coordination of voter registration drives on college campuses and research and background on important campaign issues.

In the early 2000's, I gained experience with local media by co- producing a public access cable program called “Show for The Workers”. It ran for two years. The cable program showcased issues concerning American worker rights, the war in Iraq, environmental issues and liberal political platforms, among other topics.

In 2015, I was chosen by David Gugerty, the Town of Oyster Bay Democratic Party Leader, as the Democratic candidate to represent the 17th Legislative District in the Nassau County Legislature. As a candidate representing a suburban district of over 45,000 residents, I presented a political platform that focused on key environmental issues, important government oversight and transparency, and applying modern technology in government services. Due to a very limited campaign budget, my grassroots efforts were designed with affordable publicity, use of publicly accessible databases and district mapping for canvassing, and writing articles for the local news media.

With regards to my work experience in the private sector, I've become an experienced customer service professional with a proven track record of delivering outstanding service and building strong customer relationships. I possess excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Moreover, I have a demonstrated ability to handle complex customer issues with tact and expediency.

For example, as an associate of Northwell Health Inc. on the neurology team in the Patient Access Service  (PAS) department, I answered over 70 calls a day under pressure to manage tight appointment schedules. I also triaged among 8 practices having over 70 neurologists and neurosurgeons.

My interactions with medical staff involved important matters such as medication renewals and finding solutions for health insurance issues concerning authorizations. It was my priority to listen to each person and to make sure that their phone experience was remarkable.

In September 2022, I was selected by the New York State Democratic Committee (NYSDC) to serve as a Field Organizer (FO) for the Suffolk County region. Immediately, I was welcomed by my Regional Organizational Director (ROD) to an enthusiastic and energetic team of like-minded Field Organizers. As FO's, we coordinated our mutual efforts to expand the capacity of the persuadable voter universe in Suffolk County. In October, each Field Organizer was delegated to coordinate campaign efforts in separate Congressional districts.

My responsibilities in my congressional district, NY CD-2, were to work with the local campaign headquarters of Jackie Gordon, to host a vital virtual phone bank of volunteers aimed at persuading eligible voters to support Jackie Gordon and get out the vote (GOTV). The recruitment process included shifting volunteers to critical virtual phone bank events. The recruitment of volunteers involved the use of an openVPB application to cold-call voters from a list provided by the state.

Once the volunteers were shifted and committed to an event, I routinely emailed reminders and instructions to volunteers on how to join the event's Zoom call and how to access a prewritten script with openVPB, an application used by the volunteers while contacting voters during these virtual phone bank VPB events. As host for the Zoom call, I provided ongoing help and training to ensure a successful event. In order to track the progress of volunteers, I created a spreadsheet that was used to recognize the contribution of volunteers as phone bankers during the campaign. I also created a certificate to commemorate their valued contribution to the campaign.

Throughout my role as FO, my ROD held daily virtual check-in and check-out meetings with the entire team. These meetings were important in making plans for our day and to keep an account of our coordinating progress during the election cycle. Overall, my experience as a FO has strengthened my leadership skills and introduced the use of the latest software applications in political campaigns and the use of both Google Drive and Gmail.

Now I'm seeking to fully utilize both my past experience in customer service along with my most recent role as a Field Organizer to explorer more exciting opportunities in public service.

Thank you reading.
